View Full Version : 4-cyl vs 6-cyl cars ... which one to buy?

Let me pick out a Toyota Camry as an example here :)

Advantages (of 4-cyl):
1) gas saver
2) cheaper when new
3) easier and cheaper to maintain/repair

Disadvantages:
1) not much power

Verdict:
More people buy 4-cyl than 6-cyl

Any comment?

my camry is a V4 and i don't like it, it's way too weak for me, i would rather have a V6, but again V6 are more expensive than V4, and for new cars V4 is good enough, it's just that when it get's old it starts to loose alot of powers.

I4 engine is listed above :D

now v6

Advantage:
1/POWER !
2/ Smoother ride :)
3/ Handling ([i] I don't know about camry, however, honda accord v6 has much better handling comparing to the I4)

Disadvantage:
1/ just alitle more extra gas
2/ cost more for maintan/repair (but worthed the cost !) drive for months/years and maintan/repair for a litle more .

I'd go for v6 !

ALL TRUE :)
Personally, I prefer the v-6.
But in reality, 4-cyl are sold more ... justification?

people thought that they're saving money , Coldwind :D
That's true that they do save some bucks !
however, those people should not care for power, speed, handling ....things that a car builded for :) :D

If I have to buy a 4 cylinders engine, I'd rather go for civic, integra or any other 4cylinders cars than go for an camry or accord 4cylinders :)
personal opinion though :)

People, please don't say v4 car because for 4 cylinders vehicle we call it either a inline-4 or 4-cylinder. You can say V6, V8 or Vn if you want:D :D

4-Cyl car:
1) When it's NEW, OK. But when it gets old, it doesn't want to go and especially when you turn on the air cond.
2)Save gas, right but not that much unless you compare it too those thristy American Bad A$$ v8, v10.

Common sense, Usually 4-Cyl and V6 honda and Toyota have about the same weight.

So let's do some logic work here: For the same weight, a 4-Cylinder vehicle will have to work more (harder) than the 6-cylinder vehicle. The more the engine work, the faster it gets tired and its life will be shorter. This implies that 6-cyl vehicle will usually last longer than 4-cyl vehicle. I pick 6-Cyl over 4-Cyl vehicle.

Prove me wrong.

If you can drive manual then buy a 4cyl wasn't that bad, of course is does not have smoother ride like V6 but from my opinion is strong enough to go a little bit over speed limit :D. Peoples when they buy car with 4cyl because they want to save on gas then the initial cost. But there are few exception like the Honda S2000, Toyota MR2... only got 4cyl manual but what a sweet machine. :) Car with V6 always heavier than I4 at least 100kgs, though. If you take the total weight of the vehicle devided with total engin output then you'll see.

I agree with DTB, buy v4 with manual tramission, it's the best way to save money.....I got Honda Civic with v4,1.5 engine, it's fast and I love it......my next car will be Honda Civic again.......I love it.......

To me, I think "Gas saver" is the main reason when it comes to people's mind about 4-cyl.
90+% of those 4-cyl car buyers do not car about power.
Some of them do not realize that V-6 will give a smoother ride than 4cyl.
Some think they can save about $3K for picking up the 4-cyl over 6-cyl.
Most of them do not realize that after 5 yrs on the road, the 4-cyl will run like a old lady vs 6-cyl (too late when they find out) :)

Verdict:
those 4-cyl buyers need some more knowledges about 6-cyl cars so they can make a better decision, don't U think?

Not really, it depends on the need of each person, if an old man or old lady does not drive much (work and go around the local area) then why should they need a V6 for, they dont need to run fast even they have a v8 car they still drive under 60mph, is that waste?

ConChimSe, I agree with you in term of V4. The closet engine that we may call V4 is the Subaru but it's not exactly like V either. I'd rather go for I.L. 4 or I. 4 or 4 Cyl.

"So let's do some logic work here: For the same weight, a 4-Cylinder vehicle will have to work more (harder) than the 6-cylinder vehicle. The more the engine work, the faster it gets tired and its life will be shorter. This implies that 6-cyl vehicle will usually last longer than 4-cyl vehicle. I pick 6-Cyl over 4-Cyl vehicles.

Well, I think the more components on the V6's will likely to go wrong that the simple 4 cyl. On some engines, you have 2 more camshafts, 8 more valves, 2 more spark plugs, 2 more pistons, 2 more sets of rings, 4 more intake/exhaust manifolds, some additional weights....and here is main the problem....

That rarely use extra power will ruin the auto trainny a lot sooner...look all early V6 Camry’s are having problem with their transmissions.

Compare the early 4runner/toyota truck's 22RE engines with their V6s (3.0L); the 22RE engines last 2.5 times longer. It costs a lot less to fix the 4 cyl...it saves gas and with manual transmission and lower gear transfer case....you're ready to do rock climbing. 4 cyl. can go as fast as V6s...have you ever wondered why Honda makes way more 4 cyl. engines than V6s? go and figure it out by yourself.

Just my 2 cents,

Nam

Nam,

have you ever wondered why Honda makes way more 4 cyl. engines than V6s?

the reason why Honda makes more 4 cylinders than 6 cylinders not because the problems nor the maintanance. And ofcourse not for the weaker engine for trying to save the trainy :D
There are too many reasons for them to make more 4 cylinders than 6, which make more sence to me is to lower the cost , more parts , more money . :D

and comparing the engine 22RE on those TOYOTA Pickups /SUV (I used to have one) to the new V6 ...or anyother 4 cylinders to 6 cylinder engine. If you are really concern about the cost of maintainance, and people trying to say that using stick shift (4cylinders) to beat AT (6cylinders) .... please keep this in mind that the higher RPM as your engine have to go up to , the more wear and tear that your engine has to take :) :D

prove me wrong :D:D

if you folks try to save money on the 4 cylinders then shouldn't meantion about the power .... :D:D

i dont know where u came to the conclusion a bigger engine would make the car go any smoother...
unless the upgrade from i4 to v6 vehicles include some suspension changes..

and ure making a wrong generalization..
down the road..ANY car would lose power if not properly taken care of..

I am not talking on quartẻr mile drag race PlayBoi .
how far can that 1.8L 105hp can run at that "1/4 miles drag" ?
(I strongly believe , she is the CRX that you mention above )

what's about placing an CRX and a V6 accord on a 400 + miles ?
please don't tell me the CRX will survive the chase !

btw, we had this kind of race about 6 yrs ago between the Acura Legend 92 v.s. Mr. 2 turbo on 400+ miles distance .

Mr. 2 did quite a nice job, however she had suck a hard time to keep up. we were staying above 100 at most of the time . Max speed was 145 mph. (rumble on the Legend and shaking on the Mr. 2 )

Don't try to talk about quarter mile speed when we're talking about longer distance . (since we don't need a car for a quater mile any way . .. )

peace out :D

no....i WASNT talking about the crx..

its actually the integra type R...
either if ure gonna do a max speed testing.....the R will still win most of ur v6 cars....

btw....it is very unfair to do such test..
why??
because its all base on the gears....not the amount of power a car can produce...
the longer the fifth gear<or six for some cars now> the higher the max speed will be...

btw....the gsr and the R are both 1.8L and both can exceed the speed of 155mph...

If you want horse power and also save gas, i think you should wait for few years. I heard Toyota president made a promise, in 2007 or 2010 all of Toyota cars will be hyprid, Toyota had over 200 models Japan it hard to believe, but it true. In 2004 or 05 i don't know remember clearly but the Harrier (RX-300) with come with hyprid. And as for the Supra and Porshe, i would pick Supra over the Porshe. Horse power is not everything, is how you drive you car and push it to the limit, above all it about skill.
